Empowering African Health Leaders: The AfricaCDC-Kofi Annan Global Health Leadership Programme 2024

In a groundbreaking initiative, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), in collaboration with the Kofi Annan Foundation, proudly introduces the AfricaCDC-Kofi Annan Global Health Leadership Programme. This program, launched in May 2020, aims to shape a new era of public health leadership within the African Union (AU) Member States, fostering innovation, mentorship, and a dynamic shift towards robust healthcare systems across the continent.

The upcoming cohort, Cohort 4, brings forth an exciting addition: a dedicated Mental Health track. With this expansion, the call is particularly extended to Public Mental Health Professionals, encouraging their active involvement in shaping Africa's public health landscape.

The program seeks the participation of senior officials within Government Ministries and National Public Health Institutes (NPHIs), with a special emphasis on encouraging women to apply. This strategic push aims to foster gender inclusivity and empower women in senior positions within the health sector, thereby nurturing a diverse leadership cohort.

Eligibility for the Fellowship is open to citizens of any African Union Member State, holding a postgraduate degree in a relevant field of public health. Candidates are expected to have a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in diverse public health domains, demonstrating a track record or potential for effective leadership in positively impacting African populations' health outcomes.

The Africa CDC is committed to providing comprehensive support to successful fellows, covering all associated costs, including travel, daily allowance, and insurance during residential placements. The program, spanning 12 months, focuses on advanced public health leadership, encompassing essential skills such as health diplomacy, policy influence, and change management.

Participants will engage in a hybrid learning approach, combining self-directed study, webinars, case studies, and institutional residential placements over eight weeks as a cohesive cohort. Importantly, fellows will continue their regular work responsibilities in their home countries while pursuing the program, ensuring practical application and continuity in their professional roles.

Upon completion, fellows will have honed leadership styles that inspire collaborative achievements in multidimensional health goals, developed strategies for positive health outcomes, and acquired global leadership attributes vital in navigating complex public health environments.

Applications are open until 30th January 2024, with successful applicants notified by 31st April 2024. The fellowship is set to commence on 1st June 2024, promising a transformative journey in cultivating a new generation of empowered African health leaders.
